(Source) – House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) is in stable condition after being shot early Wednesday at a baseball practice field in a Washington D.C. suburb, according to multiple reports. Scalise (R-La.) was one of several people shot at the practice in Alexandria, Va., where it is believed a single gunman fired as many as 50 shots at lawmakers and aides who scrambled for cover. Police said the gunman was in custody. Lawmakers on the scene suggested the gunman had been shot, and the shooter’s condition was unclear.
Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), his voice breaking, told CNN that “at least five” people were shot at the field. Two Capitol Police officers on protective detail were reportedly wounded, and the other two victims are believed to be congressional aides. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who said he was at the batting cage at the time of the fire, told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that he heard as many as 50 shots and described what he believed was the shooter reloading. Brooks said he used his belt as a tourniquet to help Scalise, who he said was shot in the hip. Brooks and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) both described Scalise as dragging himself away from the fire.
Unbelievable stuff coming out of Washington D.C. this morning. It’s hard for me to imagine even waking up at 6am to go attend baseball practice for a Congressional charity baseball game, but then to top it all off some asshole with a personal vendetta against Republicans shows up and decides he wants to start opening fire on them. This is exactly why any time before 8am does not exist on my alarms. There’s already enough fucked up people out there, and being in the same vicinity as them this early in the morning is a guaranteed bad time.
The current report is that the gunman was shot during the exchange of gunfire but is (at least for the time being) still alive and was transported to the hospital along with the other injured parties. Even though the shooter is a real piece of shit for openly firing into a crowd of defenseless 50+ year old men and deserves to die, I really hope he survives this. If there’s one president who’d get the call about this situation and give the ol’ “Hold my beer. Watch this.” to handle the shooter, it’d Donny J. Trump. This guy should be hoping that he bleeds out in the hospital, because there’s some pretty juicy alternatives for how to make the rest of his existence a living hell. Guantanamo Bay, some secret CIA black site, or maybe Trumpster can even ring Putin and have this waste of life sent to the Russian gulags. Whatever they choose, this man’s life is over.
I’d also like to give a quick shout out to the good old boys on the Republican’s charity baseball team. Not only were they out at a baseball field at 7am (this still baffles me) where they were set to raise $600,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of DC, but when the bullets started flying they all turned a bunch of American brothers. A crazy man is firing an AR-15 at them at and Mo Brooks is out here diving into the dugout, seeing a man down, and without a second thought takes off his belt to apply a tourniquet on him.
“I heard a break in the gunfire and decided to take a chance, ran from home plate to the first base dugout, which is also cinderblock and down about two or three feet so you can have better cover. There were a number of congressman and congressional staffers who help us lying on the ground. One of them was wounded in the leg. I took off my belt and myself and another congressman I don’t remember who applied a tourniquet to try to slow down the bleeding.” – Mo Brooks
Then there’s also a big thanks in order for the two Capitol Hill police officers who immediately jumped into the firefight with their pistols. An AR-15, guy has the drop on everyone, and he’s got cover. Do they play it safe? Fuck no, Hero #1 and Hero #2 whip out their standard issue pistols and get to shooting. Both officers were hit in the gunfight, but early reports are positive and say they should both be fine.
“In the meantime, I’m towards the right field side of the dugout and there’s gunfire within about five six seven feel of my head and I look up and there’s a guy with a gun blasting away. Fortunately, it was one of the good guys. One of our security detail who was shooting back. Of course it was pistol versus rifle, our pistols versus the shooter’s rifle on the third base line just outside the chain link fence and he was warning us to stay down.” – Mo Brooks
P.S. – So many Southern boys from baseball rich states on this squad. The Republican team is going to make this charity game their bitch.
