(Source) – A jury awarded former Penn State assistant football coach Mike McQueary $7.3 million in damages on Thursday. McQueary was a key witness in the sexual molestation case against another former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky. Jurors found that McQueary was defamed by the university after it became public that he had reported seeing Sandusky abusing a boy in a team shower.
McQueary said that since his testimony was made public he’s been unable to find work, his marriage broke up and he lives with his parents.
NPR’s Jeff Brady reports that the university argued in court that McQueary’s contract was not renewed in a routine shake-up after Paterno was fired. University lawyers also said that McQueary could have reported the crime to the police himself.
Congrats, I guess, to Mike McQueary on probably becoming one of the 5 richest gingers in the US, and all it took was a defamation lawsuit caused by a creepy old dude who liked to touch kids, so that’ll definitely be a fun way for him to explain his newfound wealth to everyone.
I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this even went to court. What was Penn State thinking? So many fucked up, newsworthy events have happened in the years since the Sandusky case, yet they decide they want to try and fade a $7 million dollar payment and risk this story getting back in the headlines. Things seemed like they were just getting back to normal with the PSU football program too. “Hey guys, great upset win over the #2 team in the nation. Also, avoid the press for the next week guys, we kinda fucked up…bad.”
Fun fact: In case you were wondering who is actually the richest ginger in the world, it’s Carrot Top. He’s worth $75 million, so I’m sure after reading that you’re feeling really good about your life choices right now. I know I am…
